Dr. Shekhar Ramesh Kulkarni (Breast Surgeon and oncologist) in the year 2002 get motivated by the concept of cancer support groups existing in foreign countries. He has been treating various breast cancer patients and is well aware about the difficulties faced by the patients and survivors during treatment and rehabilitation. With a view to minimize the sufferings of patients and survivors he decided to set up a breast cancer support group and accordingly it was set up by him including 20 patients and their care takers (mostly family members). The first meeting of the group was held in January 2002. Initially the activities of the group were sharing meetings and counselling of patients which were limited to group only. At first, it was quite impossible to provide financial aid to needy patients but emotional support was strongly given. Slowly the group was settled and as the services provided by the group were quite satisfactory, various patients and their relatives started donating funds for this activity.
